Would you say that you operate at a high level of energy most days? Most of us would like a bump every now and then. If you’d like to increase your energy one of the best ways is to do that is to live through the principle of the Law of Least Resistance.
The Law of Least Resistance can be used to increase your overall energy level. The Law of Least Resistance simply means that things in nature expend the least amount of energy possible. If you look at a tree or a flower, anything that is growing in nature, you see it is not struggling to grow. It is simply growing. It is doing what it’s meant to do and it’s not efforting. It is allowing life to take it where it needs to go.
Martial arts looks at the law of least resistance in that when we are constantly blocking life and putting out lots of energy we are wasting energy. Martial arts is about conserving energy and actually coming out ahead by doing so. We waste our energy in lots of different ways. Worry is one of them. Worry and stress take a whole lot of energy in our lives. When we worry and stress we fear that we are not developing properly. Worry is fear that life is not working out properly and the thought that by muscling through it, by somehow controlling it, things will go better. Doing this actually depletes our energy and prevents us from coming in to our fullest potential the way we would if we let go. The serenity prayer says:
God, grant the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, and
The Wisdom to know the difference
There are a lot of things in life we can control about ourselves about the way we use our own energy and a lot of things on the outside we cannot control. When we try to control them we are wasting our resources.
Look at your life. See how you waste energy. What do you resist in life? What you resist persists, and it comes back stronger to the point where it takes over your life. Following the Law of Least Resistance is being strategic about your energy use. You are going with the flow. When you go with the flow you come out ahead. This doesn’t mean you don’t make plans. It doesn’t mean you don’t put in dedication and commitment and hard work to what you’re doing. It means you don’t resist what is happening – that’s why it’s the law of least resistance. Working hard is different from resisting what is coming towards you.
If you get feedback from the world that something you’re doing isn’t working take it. Just take it instead of resisting it. You can still move forward in a different way. It’s like when someone uses their tongue sharply with you. You can move around it. Move around it instead of letting it hit you and trying to defend yourself all the time, because when you resist and defend you are actually stooping to their level and you’re wasting your energy so they actually end up “winning” the fight. Let it bounce off of you, let it roll off of you, let it pass through you, let it slide off your back. That is the law of least resistance.
What are you resisting in your life?
