We all get down.  We all feel sad.  We’ve all felt depressed.  What do you do when you feel depressed? What do you do to lift your spirits?

At the end of the day, it’s really up to you to lift your own spirits. Other people can help.  Other people can do different things to try to lift your spirits, but at the end of the day, it’s about the own action that we take in our lives.  When you are really down and feeling depressed, feeling hopeless, feeling alone, there is one thing that will always lift your spirits, aside from exercise, and that is joining a community.

This can be hard when you’re feeling down, because you don’t feel social and usually you don’t have the energy to be social when you’re depressed.  It takes energy which feels like more of a drain, especially if your introverted, however if you take that step, the same way you do to exercise, but you take that step, yes it requires effort but the payoff is huge.  There are so many different types of communities you can join, clubs, sports, political parties, friends groups, meet-up groups.  All kinds of communities you can join.  You don’t even have to officially join a group.  You can do something that day or that weekend by looking online or in your local paper that weekend and seeing what’s going on in your town and joining in with that.

joined handsBecause mental health research has shown that community is the single biggest factor that prevents depression and suicide.  People who feel alone and isolated do not have that sense of being a part of something bigger than them.  They feel disconnected.  When you join in something else that is bigger than you, it lightens your load and you form that connection again.  We are relational creatures.  It is primary to our nature.  We have to have relationships.  We have to have contact with other people in order not only to thrive but to survive.  If you go volunteer, even if it’s just for a day, that gives you a sense of being connected and being a part of something that’s bigger than you.

Think about glow sticks.  What do I have to do to make it glow?  I have to snap it, and then it lights up!  You have to take action and then YOU will light up.  You light up when you take action for your own benefit, when you parent yourself in that way.  What would you do for a sad depressed child?  You would take some kind of action to make them feel better, to help them have hope, to help them feel connected.  When you take action you light up and depression dissipates, even when you’re feeling lonely, empty, drained of energy, take that action, go serve somewhere, go give somewhere, or join some group and you will light yourself up. Guaranteed!
