If I were to ask you to tell me your life story how would it go?

Each of us has a story in our mind.  Regardless of whether you have shared it with someone or not, you have a story of your life.  That is because we as humans frame our lives in stories.  We actually frame the events of our daily life as stories.  The cool thing about this is our perspectives change over time, therefore our stories can change over time too.

canvasYou are the star of your story.  You are the producer.  You are the director.  That is good news, because that also means that you can change your story.  The facts are the facts are the facts, there’s no denying the facts, but when I ask someone to tell me about their life they don’t tell me the facts straight up no one ever does that.  They tell me the story around the facts.  Think of things in your life, in your past, in your current situation, or even in your future; your future goals and your future dreams.  What is the story around them?

In addition to just the facts the story is what gives our life meaning.  The story creates the silver lining in the gruesome facts.  The Buddha said, “Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”  Let me make it more contemporary, “Every human being is the author of his or her own health or disease.”  That means that whether it’s our health, our relationships, or another kind of situation in our life, we are the author, for better or for worse.  And the more knowledge we have the more power we have to create the stories that we want to create.

What’s your life story?  It doesn’t need to be all good or all bad.  If you watch a great drama film there is a little bit of everything in it, but it’s the juiciness that gives your life meaning.  Think about things in your life that are stories and look at the ones that are stories that you dislike.  Stories that you wish would change, stories you are tired of, stories you wish would go away.  Guess what, you can make that story go away, and you can create a new story.  You have it in you to do that!  I would love to hear your new story.
